Carbonized Timber Finish: A Traditional Technique for Modern Projects
At Boryer & Son, we use a centuries-old charring method—similar to the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique—to create a naturally stunning, long-lasting finish on our gum timber. By carefully burning the surface of each sleeper, then washing, sanding, and oiling with raw linseed oil, we achieve a deep, rich color without relying on harsh chemicals. This process forms a protective barrier that helps extend the timber’s lifespan and reduce maintenance.
Charring has been recognized for generations as a way to protect and preserve wood. The slight burn on the outside naturally guards against moisture and pests, making it ideal for outdoor projects like garden beds, retaining walls, or landscape features. The charred layer also highlights the wood’s grain, giving every piece a one-of-a-kind look that blends modern style with rustic charm.
We’re proud to offer this eco-friendly finishing process, which aligns with our commitment to sustainability and respect for the land. Each sleeper is hand-treated on our family farm, ensuring consistent quality and attention to detail.
