Hi, I’m Shayde.
At Boryer & Son you could say that we have NZ wood running through our blood. We have been working various aspects of the industry for over 100 years.
Harry Boryer established the somewhat famous Smyth Brothers & Boryer mills around the Waikato in the early 1900's, after crosscutting with Hibby and Jack Smyth. His son Alfred (snr) also worked in these mills. Alfred Jnr (his son) grew up in Ngaroma, a small settlement surrounding the Ngaroma mill and then Te Puru on the Coromandel.
He spent many years harvesting and milling the natural woods on the Coromandel, mostly kauri, before we knew any better. Years later armed with this in depth knowledge of the area he returned to recover the kauri treasures preserved in various swamps on the peninsula.
With horse and rope he recovered only what he personally needed and hand milled it. From here he created his stunning collections of coffee tables.
Those days are long gone but the skills learnt through generations have remained and have been passed on the the latest generations, me (Shayde) and my son Riley and my nephew Roby.
These days we are local here in Dovedale, Nelson, running a small operation with the capacity to handle both small and large orders. We focus is on delivering quality eucalyptus timber and a personal service. We focus on garden and outdoor timber—such as sleepers, posts, and raised garden beds—catering to anyone from home owners to professional landscapers.
The families 50-acre farm is home to over 1,000 mature gum trees up to 50 years old, alongside stands of Douglas fir, redwoods, and macrocarpa. As we carefully mill these trees, being mindful of maintaining the natural beauty of our land by replanting and promoting healthy forest growth. This approach helps ensure our local environment remains vibrant and productive for generations to come. Central to our work is a commitment to straightforward service, honest communication, and going the extra mile. I’ll let you know how long it will take and what it will cost so you always know where you stand. If you’re looking for quality timber direct from a a local sawmill, please get in touch. I’m here to help and look forward to discussing your next project.
Deliveries are mostly local to Nelson but I do deliver to other areas of New Zealand (including the North Island) at times or can arrange freight.
